Strong Finish Propels Prugh To Fifth At Torrey Pines
Jan. 31, 2010
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Alex Prugh caught fire on the back nine of Torrey Pines to finish 11-under 277 overall and record his second-consecutive fifth-place PGA Tournament finish.
Prugh shot a 6-under 66 in the final round - the second-best round of the day - and moved all the way up from 25th place to finish two strokes behind winner Ben Crane. For his efforts, Prugh will take home $186,162, this after winning $200,000 the previous week at the Bob Hope Classic.
The Husky letterman from 2004-07 had his ups and downs on the front nine, converting four birdies, but also carding two bogeys. It was on the back nine where Prugh would hit some great shots and make up ground.
He chipped in from 28-yards off the green on the par-4 No. 12 to card a birdie and then eagled No. 13 to drop two more strokes. Prugh knocked his second shot on the 614-yard par 5 hole from 225-yards out to within two feet of the cup. He would convert the gimme putt from there to go 10-under overall.
Prugh ultimately reached 11-under by birdieing the 223-yard Par-3 16th hole. He hit his tee shot to within 8 feet of the cup and converted his birdie putt.
Three other golfers joined Prugh at 5-under, including Ernie Els, Ricky Fowler and Michael Allen.
