Jan. 31, 2010

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The No. 23 ranked University of Arizona men's tennis team bounced back after a tough loss yesterday and took down No. 22 Auburn University 4-0 on day two of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoors at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium.

'Great overall team effort,' head coach Tad Berkowitz said.  'It was a solid win today and the guys should be proud of themselves.'

The Wildcats (2-1) took the lead early, with junior Andres Carrasco and senior Andres Arango continuing their solid play by topping Auburn's (0-2) Andreas Mies and Oliver Strecker 8-3 in the first set of doubles.  The duo of Carrasco and Arango won both of their doubles matches in the No. 2 position this weekend, improving their record to 3-0 this season as a pair.

In the second match of doubles, junior Geoff Embry and senior Ravid Hazi clinched the doubles point by breezing by Tim Hewitt and Alexander Sajonz 8-2. The third match of doubles was suspended, since the Wildcats already garnered the doubles point. Before play was stopped, senior Pat Metham and junior Borja Malo were tied 5-5 with Auburn's No. 6 ranked duo of Tim Puetz and Alex Stamchev.

Metham, who led yesterday in his match before play was suspended, had no problem defeating Nick Maurillo 6-2, 6-2 in singles play.  Embry followed up with the same style and rebounded from yesterday's loss by defeating Sajonz 6-2, 6-2.

With the Wildcats leading 3-0, Malo helped his team pick up the victory by beating Mies 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 4 position to secure the 4-0 sweep.

In other singles action, Auburn's No. 24 Puetz and Wildcat No.113 Jason Zafiros were battling back and forth in the No. 1 spot before play was suspended. In the first set, Puetz won 6-3 and they were tied in the second set 6-6.  Carrasco won his first set 6-4 against Hewitt and was behind 2-1 in the second set.  Rounding out singles play, in the No. 3 spot, Arango dropped his first set to No. 86 Stamchev 7-5  and was leading set two 2-1.
