Bruins Begin Spring Season in Hawai'i
Feb. 2, 2010
UCLA's 13th ranked men's golf team begins its spring season in Hawai'i Wednesday, playing in the 20th Annual Mauna Lani Invitational at Mauni Lani Resort in Hilo, HI.
Twenty-two teams will compete in the 54-hole event that features top-ranked Oklahoma State, second-ranked Stanford and eighth-ranked Washington, among other schools.
The Bruins, who recorded a pair of fourth place finishes in their fall season, will compete with a lineup devoid of upperclassmen: two sophomores and three freshmen.
Sophomores Gregor Main and Alex Shi Yup Kim were mainstays in the lineup last season. Recently, Main won the Silicon Valley Invitational and will play in the Arnold Palmer Invitational next month because of his victory in the Southern Amateur last summer. Kim last year played in 28 rounds, including the NCAA Championship. Through two fall events, he was averaging 72.6.
Pedro Figueiredo leads a threesome of freshmen that includes Pontus Widegren and Bobby Lange. Currently the 12th-ranked collegian in the U.S., Figueiredo leads the team with a scoring average of 70.1 and was 11-under par through six rounds in the fall. He also recorded a pair of Top 10 results.
Widegren tied for third in his last event, firing a five-under par 67 at the Gifford Collegiate in November. His scoring average was 72.1 and half of his six rounds played in the fall were under par. Lange played in both fall events and his best result was a 72nd place finish at the Gifford tournament.
