Duo Wins Prelim Diving Events
Feb. 2, 2010
COLUMBUS, Ohio-- Meg Hostage and Carmen Stellar won their respective preliminary events at the U.S. Winter National Diving Championships, the second and third Stanford divers to win in the Buckeye State in two days. Both will move onto the main draw, which features eight Olympians starting on February 4.
Hostage's score of 255.15 in the one-meter springboard gave the Cardinal senior her first chance at the main event after she missed the cut yesterday by one spot with a 15th place finish in the three-meter. Hostage's best dive came on her first, a forward 2 1/2 somersault pike, where she scored an 8.0 and two 7.5's for 57.20 points. Her scores bettered former Rider diver, Amanda Burke (235.70).
Stellar made it a sweep for the Cardinal on day two, as she scored 285.50 in the platform, better than Florida teenager Wallace Layland's mark of 277.10. The judges twice gave Stellar a mark of 60.80, on her first dive, an inward, 3/12 somersault tuck and on an armstand back, two somersault, 1 1/2 twist.
Stellar, who finished third yesterday in the three-meter prelim, will be one of four Stanford divers to compete in two events.
Incoming recruit Stephanie Phipps' eighth place showing (219.60) in the one-meter, gives her two events as well, after qualifying for the three-meter yesterday.
Alum Cassidy Krug was the first Cardinal to win in Ohio, posting the top score in the three-meter prelim yesterday. Krug was already prequalified in the synchro three-meter. Brent Eichenseer will also compete in the one and three-meter events on the men's side.
The quarterfinals, semifinal and finals will run from February 4-8 on the campus of Ohio State.
