Golden Bears Blank Gaels for Fourth Straight Victory
Feb. 2, 2010
BERKELEY - The No. 3-ranked California women's tennis team (4-0) claimed a 7-0 win over Saint Mary's College (1-1) at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Tuesday, Feb. 2. The Golden Bears recorded their fourth consecutive dual victory and will look forward to hosting Arizona State in a non-league match this weekend at noon PT on Saturday, Feb. 6.
Cal came out and won the doubles point for the fourth time this season as junior Mari Andersson and sophomore Jana Juricova teamed up for an 8-1 win over Anna Chikhikvishvili and Catherine Isip at the top court. Minutes later, junior Marina Cossou and senior Kasia Siwosz finished off an 8-2 win over Alex Poorta and Claire Soper at the No. 2 doubles court to seal the point for the Bears. Sophomore Stephany Chang and freshman Tayler Davis couldn't stop Alita Fisher and Nienke Strijbis at court three as the Bears fell, 8-2.
With the doubles point in hand, the Bears wasted little time securing the match as the top three courts completed straight-set wins in just over an hour. No. 10-ranked Cossou came off the courts first as she defeated Poorta, 6-2, 6-1, to make the score, 2-0, for Cal. Second-ranked Juricova registered the same set scores in her win over Isip at the top court to give the Bears a commanding 3-0 lead. No. 83-ranked Andersson clinched the win at No. 3 singles in her 6-0, 6-1 victory against Soper.
In her first collegiate dual match, freshman Nelly Radeva earned a 6-1, 6-0 win against Sabina Gunnarsson at court six to give the Bears their fifth point of the day. Siwosz split sets with Chikhikvishvili at No. 4 singles before pulling out a three-set win. She fell, 6-4, in the first before battling back to earn a 6-4 win of her own in the second set and later finished things off in the third-set super-tiebreaker with a 10-5 win. Davis needed a tiebreaker in her first set against Alisa Spitzer on court five where she won, 7-4. She then proved to be more efficient in the second set with a 6-3 result to give the Bears their seventh point of the match.
Cal is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 6, as the Bears play host to No. 29-ranked Arizona State (4-1, 0-0 Pac-10) in a noon PT match at Hellman Tennis Complex. Please visit CalBears.com for more information.
