Sprinters, Hurdlers in Nebraska
Feb. 4, 2010
LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Arizona's No. 23 men and No. 16 women's track and field teams keep the 2010 indoor season this weekend as the sprinters, hurdlers and throwers head to Lincoln, Neb. to take part in the 35th Annual Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational.
The Wildcats have been a model for consistency in the first three weeks of competition and, with the indoor version of the conference championship just a couple weeks away, have not time to slow down. The team has already posted three NCAA Championship automatic qualifications and nine provisionals this season and will be looking for more against some elite competition this weekend.
Nebraska's ranked men's and women's teams will be in action at their home meet in addition to strong Big-12 programs from Kansas and Kansas State.
The level of competition will provide some good scenery to push some UA athletes right on the edge of qualifications over the hump. The women's 4x400-meter relay team came just over a second shy of earning one of those qualifications at the New Mexico Invitational last weekend and will try again on the notoriously fast track at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Chris Titsworth, competing in his final year of eligibility indoors, is another athlete who has come very close to a national qualification in the 60-meter hurdles and will get another shot this weekend as well.
In the 60-meter hurdles, junior LaTisha Holden is coming back after the race of her life last weekend settling a personal record and fifteenth-fastest time in the country in Albuquerque in an altitude-converted 8.36. She and sophomore Dahlys Marshall have been impressive in the event this season and will look to maintain the momentum.
In the throws, it's been a story of two impressive freshmen as Alyssa Hasslen and Julie Labonte have both earned NCAA provisional qualifications already in the young careers. Both are ranked in the top 20 in the event nationally and hope to better their standing in Lincoln.
Events will kick on Friday and continue into Sunday. Some members of the Arizona jumping squad will head back to Albuquerque to compete as well.
