Corvallis, Ore.– The Oregon State women’s cross country and track team inked one during the National Letter of Intent signing period, announced Thursday by head coach Kelly Sullivan.
“We are extremely excited about signing Emily,” Sullivan said. “Emily comes from one of the premiere high school programs in the entire country and brings a wealth of range from the 800 meters to 5,000 meter cross country race. Then throw in the fact that she is one of her state’s top 300 meter hurdlers, and that makes the 3000 meter steeplechase a definite possibility.
We truly believe we just signed one of the nation's top up and coming middle distance runners in Emily. And it goes without saying it is always a significant day when you sign a talent like hers from a state like Colorado that year in and out develop some of the nation's top high school prospects. So the national exposure for our program is enhanced, too”
Emily LaValley (Colorado Springs, Colo./The Classical Academy) is a 2009 Colorado state championships runner-up in cross country and competes in the 300 meter hurdles, 800 meters and 5,000 meters in outdoor track. Her current personal bests in the three races are 46.34 in the 300 meter hurdles, 2:14.57 in the 800 meters and 18:26.90 in the 5,000 meters.
”I chose Oregon State because I really enjoyed my visit and the people I met like the coaches, and I had just a really good feeling about it when I left,” LaValley said. “I’m really excited to meet the team and start running.”
She set her personal bests at the state track meet last season, finishing second in the 800 meters and third in the hurdles. LaValley has yet to compete in the mile or two-mile, but the plan is to work on that this season.
