Gym Devils Score Season High in Fall to No. 4 Utah

The Arizona State women's gymnastics team scored a season-high 195.700 against No. 4 Utah. Junior Mary Atkinson placed second in the all-around scoring a 39.300. Utah's Daria Bijak placed first with a 39.400. First time all-around performer Stephanie Hangartner earned a total of 39.100. The Utes held the Sun Devils 196.475-195.700.
The Gym Devils started the competition strong on vault compiling a team score of 49.025. Atkinson continued to shine on the runway tying her career-best of a 9.900. Price nailed her landing tallying her career-best of 9.850. Hangartner and Kaitlynn Bormann both scored 9.800, marking Hangartner's career best. Carly McMahon competed on vault, for her second time this season earning a 9.675. Freshman Amelia Rew collected a 9.675 after taking a step forward on her landing. The Utes hit all six vaults earning a team total of 49.250.
The Sun Devils outscored the Utes on bars 48.700 to 48.250. Atkinson had a strong performance nailing her ginger to a straddle back earning a 9.800. Palafox sailed cleanly through the air performing her releases with ease posting a 9.775. Mercurio and Palafox both tallied the score of 9.775. Hangrtner and Bormann earned scores of 9.750. Johnson fell on her blindchange leading to a post of 9.200.
The Utes held the lead going into the third rotation 147.325 to 146.675. The Sun Devils performed on beam in the third rotation compiling a team total of 48.800. Palafox led the Sun Devils with a career-best performance scoring a 9.825. Palafox hit a perfect series to clutch her career-high score. Atkinson hit her front tuck mount posting a 9.725. Bormann performed a solid 9.800, while Hangartner hopped on her dismount posting a 9.750. Kelly Reilly stuck her double twisting layout dismount to earn a career-best score of 9.700. Mercurio fell on her mount tallying a 9.200. The Utes hit beam compiling a team score of 49.150.
Johnson and Atkinson led the Gym Devils on floor both scoring a 9.875. Johnson hit all three tumbling passes to earn her career-high score. Atkinson nailed her whip double twist in her second pass during a solid floor performance to tie her career-best. Snowden competed full of power and energy scoring a 9.850 in her first official floor routine. Hangartner finished her fourth event of the competition nailing all three tumbling passes to tally a 9.800. Schuett posted a 9.625 while Mercurio posted a 9.500 after landing short on her first pass, a double pike. The Utes led the Devils on floor 49.025 to 49.100.
The Gym Devils travel to Washington next weekend to compete against the Huskies. The meet begins at 2p.m. PT on Saturday.
