Cardinal Wrestling Edges UC Davis, 20-19, For First Pac-10 Win

DAVIS, Calif. - The Cardinal wrestling team earned its first Pac-10 win with a 20-19 victory over UC Davis, Saturday, at Hicky Gymnasium in Davis, Calif. Stanford is now 9-7-1 on the season and 1-2-1 in the Pac-10, while the Aggies drop to 2-10 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

The Cardinal came out strong, taking a 6-0 lead in the dual as freshman Ryan Mango pinned Chris Armendariz in 1:11 at 125 pounds for his fastest fall of the season. Mango improves to 20-11 overall and is just one victory away from breaking into Stanford's top-10 freshman wins list.

At 133 pounds, redshirt junior Justin Paulsen scored first with a takedown, but was unable to earn any more points as he dropped a 7-3 decision to UC Davis junior Brandon Low. Low, ranked 15th nationally, scored with two escapes to tie the score, and then took the lead, 4-2, with his first takedown. Paulsen cut the lead to one with an escape, but Low scored another takedown at the end of the third period and earned his final point for riding time.

The Aggies tied the dual score at 6-6 as 141-pound senior Bryan Osuna posted a 7-2 decision over freshman Bret Baumbach. Osuna scored with three takedowns and earned a final point for riding time. Baumbach drops to 10-17 on the season.

UC Davis took the lead, 9-6, after 15th-ranked Barrett Abel earned a 4-0 decision over Cardinal senior Tyler Parker at 149 pounds. The Aggies added to their lead at 157 pounds, as Trevor Machado-Ching used seven takedowns to pick up an 18-7 major decision over redshirt freshman Mike Kent.

Redshirt sophomore Nick Amuchastegui pulled the Cardinal within four as he recorded his 25th win of the season with a 4-1 decision over Joey Wilson at 165 pounds. Amuchastegui, ranked first in the Pac-10, got on the board first with a takedown in the opening period. Wilson cut the lead to one with an escape, but Amuchastegui tallied an escape to start the third period and concluded the scoring with a point for riding time. Amuchastegui improves to 15-1 in dual matches this season.

Senior Jake Johnson cut the UC Davis lead to 13-12 as he snapped a four-match losing streak to post an 8-4 decision over Alex Darkhovsky at 174 pounds. Johnson registered three takedowns in the victory as he improves to 16-14 on the season. He needs just three wins to break into the Cardinal's top-10 in career wins.

The Cardinal took the lead, 16-13 as 13th-ranked Zack Gisen recorded a 17-6 major decision over Rory McBryde at 184 pounds. Giesen earned six takedowns, an escape and three near fall points to improve to 25-4 on the season and 14-2 in dual matches.

With the dual on the line, Stanford freshman Richard Kessler came up with a 9-1 major decision over Shawn Hoehne at 197 pounds. The rookie improves to 14-15 on the year and 8-9 in dual competitions.

Stanford was forced to forfeit at heavyweight due to injury, bringing the dual score to 20-19 in favor of the Cardinal.

Up next, Stanford returns to The Farm for Senior Day, Friday, Feb. 12 versus Cal State Bakersfield at 6 p.m. The Cardinal will honor its two seniors, Jake Johnson and Tyler Parker, before the dual. Stanford will then travel to Tempe, Ariz., Feb. 14, for its final Pac-10 dual of the season against the Sun Devils.
