Golden Bears Wipeout Warriors, 6-1, in Sunday Matinee

Feb. 7, 2010

BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team defeated Hawaii, 6-1, on Sunday (Feb. 7) at the Hellman Tennis Complex as freshman Riki McLachlan maintained his perfect 5-0 record in dual singles matches to clinch the victory for the Golden Bears. Cal won the doubles point for the sixth time this season and pushed its record to 6-1 as the Rainbow Warriors fell to 5-3.

The Bears claimed the doubles point as Cal's No. 49-ranked tandem of sophomore Nick Andrews and freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt teamed up to defeat Leo Rosenberg and Jeremy Tweedt, 8-4, at court two. Just seconds earlier, junior Bozhidar Katsarov and McLachlan took an 8-6 win over Dennis Lajola and Daniel Llarenas at court three to give the Bears the upper hand. With the first point decided, Cal's junior duo of Jonathan Dahan and Pedro Zerbini finished off an 8-6 victory over Philipp Eberhard and Andreas Weber at the top court to make it a sweep for the Bears.

One hour into singles matches, the Bears went up, 2-0, as Andrews defeated Tweedt, 6-2, 6-2, at court three. The Warriors responded to get on the board with a win at court four as Rosenberg took out No. 98-ranked Katsarov by the same score. Cal went ahead by two points again, 3-1, as Zerbini earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at the top court over Lajola. After four deuce-points, Zerbini held serve to go up, 5-4, in the first, before breaking Lajola's serve to win the set, and gathering the momentum he needed to earn a 6-1 win in the second.

McLachlan cruised to a 6-2 win in his first set with Eberhard at No. 5 singles, but struggled as he fell behind, 4-2, in the second. McLachlan fought back to earn a five-all tie before going on to finish off a 7-5 win in the second set to clinch the match for the Bears. Senior Bijan Hejazi earned his first dual-match singles victory as a Bear when he took out Llarenas at court six in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, to make the score, 5-1, for Cal. No. 106-ranked Konigsfeldt was the last Bear off the court as he came back from dropping his first set, 6-1, to earn a three-set victory over Weber, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The Bears will be back in action on Feb. 20 (Sat.), as they head down the road to Stanford to face the Cardinal in a 1 p.m. PT match at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Please check CalBears.com for more information.
