Arizona's Chitwood and Stanford's Smit Named January's Pac-10 Swimmers of the Month

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.- ARIZONA redshirt sophomore Cory Chitwood and STANFORD senior Julia Smit have been named Pac-10 Men's and Women's Swimmers of the Month for the month of January, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Chitwood, a native of Union, Ky., turned in six first-place finishes over the month of January and finished no worse than fourth in any of his races to lead the third-ranked Wildcats to wins over No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Stanford, No. 4 California and No. 23 SMU. Chitwood turned in two first-place finishes against SMU with a time of 49.68 in the 100 meter backstroke, followed by another winning time of 1:47.18 in the 200 meter backstroke.
Smit continued her strong season in January with wins in eight out of 10 individual events, earning NCAA 'A' or 'B' standards in each race. Against then-No.9 USC on January 30, Smit, out of Mt. Sinai, N.Y., turned in a five-win performance, including wins in the 100 meter and 200 meter breaststroke, the 200 backstroke with a 'B' standard of 1:55.86, a 'B' qualifier of 1:56.41 in the 200 medley and helped the Cardinal churn out a win in the 400 medley relay with a 'B' qualifying time of 3:38.63.
This is the first monthly award for Chitwood and the third overall for Arizona. For Smit, this is her third Pac-10 Swimmer of the Month recognition this season and the fifth of her career, the most of any Pac-10 women's swimmer all-time. Overall, it is the eighth monthly award for Stanford on the women's side.
