Swimming and Diving Head Up I-10
Feb. 11, 2010
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona men’s and women’s swimming and diving team’s conclude its dual meet season as it heads to Tempe to face Arizona State at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
In the teams’ last outing, each topped Texas during a two-day dual meet in Tucson. Currently the women are ranked second in the country, followed by the men who are third overall.
The rankings can be a bit deceiving as the Wildcat men have defeated the No. 1 Longhorns, No. 2 Stanford and No. 4 California in the past month.
In terms of standout performers, the women’s team has been led by seniors Ana Agy and Annie Chandler. Over the month of January, Agy won 12 individual events, while Chandler has been dominant in her 100 breast individual race.
Also swimming well is sophomore Alyssa Anderson who owns top performance times on the season in the 500 free, 200 fly and 400 I.M. She is also second on the team in both the 200 free and 1000 free.
For the Wildcat men, they’ll look to depth in the backstroke, breaststroke and individual medley’s to really do damage. Currently UA holds the four fastest times in the 200 breast and the three fastest times in the 400 I.M. In the 200 back, Chitwood leads the country with a time of 1:41.65 and is second in the 100 back at 46.93.
Senior Jean Basson has a stranglehold on the distance freestyle competition. The South African senior currently leads the country in the 500 free and 1650 free with times of 4:15.22 and 14:50.32. Basson is also second in the 200 free in the nation with a time of 1:34.66.
Following the dual meet, the Wildcat women will travel to Long Beach, Calif., Feb. 24-27, to compete in the Pac-10 Championships. The men will continue training in Tucson and head to Long Beach a week later for their conference championship event.
