No. 24 Men's Golf Readies for Battle at the Beach
Feb. 12, 2010
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The 24th ranked men's golf team is back in action this weekend when it heads to Newport Coast, Calif. for the Battle at the Beach hosted by Long Beach State and UCLA.
This is the first time the Beavers have competed at the Pelican Hill Golf Club, but that's not always a disadvantage according to head coach Brian Watts.
'It's nice to have seen it prior to a tournament round, but that's what practice rounds are for,' Watts said. 'We'll go down there and figure it out, get a game plan. The more you play a course the more comfortable you are with it. You can't win a tournament on the first round, but you can definitely lose one. So our philosophy will be to come out a little conservative, and then step it up as we get more comfortable.'
The event features a 'six count five,' meaning each team will play with six players, with the top five scores counting. It also allows for two members of the same team to be paired up with two members of a different team. The Beavers look forward to the chance to play with their teammates.
'It's a unique event.' Watts said. 'It will get a little camaraderie going, and a chance to feed off of each other. It'll be unique, but it will be a lot of fun for the guys to play.'
The Beavers lineup this week includes senior Paul Peterson, who has been sidelined with a shoulder injury. Peterson has battled back from the injury and has scored well in qualifying recently. Joining Peterson on the trip will be seniors Diego Velasquez and Mike Barry, sophomores Morten Madsen and Alex Moore, and freshman Nick Sherwood.
The tournament will be played on the Pelican Hill Golf Club's Ocean North Course which is par-71, 6,945 yards. The field for the event will feature eight top 50 ranked teams including No. 6 Washington, No. 13 Tennessee, No. 14 UCLA, No. 15 Arizona State, No. 35 San Diego State, No. 39 Colorado State and No. 48 Arkansas as well as Colorado, Notre Dame, San Francisco, Texas-San Antonio and UC Davis.
