No. 3 Golden Bears Move Ahead to ITA Indoor Quarterfinal

MADISON, Wis. - The No. 3-ranked California women's tennis team (5-0) earned a 5-2 victory over ninth-ranked Georgia Tech (5-1) on Friday, Feb. 12, in the round of 16 at the 2010 ITA National Team Indoor Championship held at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium to advance to the quarterfinal. The Golden Bears will draw No. 12 UCLA (6-0) next, in a match not to begin before 1:30 p.m. PT, Saturday (Feb. 13). Cal has now defeated Georgia Tech the last three times the teams have met.
The Bears came out of the gates with three strong victories on the doubles courts in order to earn the first point of the day. Junior Marina Cossou and senior Kasia Siwosz set Cal in the right direction with their 8-3 win over Hillary Davis and Viet Ha Ngo on court two. Freshmen Bears Tayler Davis and Annie Goransson also registered an 8-3 victory at court three as the pair clinched the doubles point for Cal by defeating Lynn Blau and Elizabeth Kilborn. At the top court, junior Mari Andersson and sophomore Jana Juricova earned an 8-5 win against Irina Falconi and Sasha Krupina to give the Bears the sweep.
Cal went up, 2-0, in the match as No. 10-ranked Cossou made short work of No. 66 Krupina at the second singles court, 6-2, 6-1. But the Yellow Jackets responded right away to pull within a point as Amanda McDowell took out Siwosz, 6-2, 6-4, at court four. The Bears went up by two once more when Davis finished up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kilborn on the sixth court. No. 83-ranked Andersson sent Cal into the quarterfinal when she defeated Ngo at the third court, 6-0, 6-3.
With the outcome decided Georgia Tech put a second point on the board as the top-ranked Falconi snapped second-ranked Juricova's nine-match singles winning streak with a 7-6, 7-5 win at court one. Falconi edged Juricova for the first set by winning the tiebreaker, 9-7. Cal earned the final point of the day to make the score, 5-2, as Goransson defeated Blau in a third-set tiebreaker, 10-1, after the two split the first two sets. Blau won the first set, 6-3, before Goransson evened the match with a 6-4 win in the second set.
