Feb. 13, 2010
TEMPE, Ariz. - The California Golden Bears dropped four runs on Western Michigan in the first inning en route to a 9-1 mercy win in five innings on Saturday morning thanks to a Lindsey Ziegenhirt grand slam. The Bears (2-1) turned in three more runs in the second to ensure their victory over WMU (1-3) in the Kajiwawa Classic.
Cal kicked off its scoring barrage in the first with back-to-back hits from the top of the line-up. Valerie Arioto doubled to centered followed by a Jamia Reid single to third. After a Jolene Henderson strike out, Jace Williams drew a walk to load the bases. For the third consecutive game, Ziegenhirt then totaled a pitch for her third home run in as many games for a grand slam, putting the Bears up 4-0 with just one away.
It was a similar story for the Bears in their half of the second. Taylor Kelly led off, earning a walk and then advancing to second on a ground out by Frani Echavarria. Arioto took her turn at the plate again and sent one over the left-field fence to distance the Bears, 5-0. Later in the inning, Ziegenhirt earned her fifth RBI of the game when she walked to plate Jamia Reid, who had singled to third.
Western Michigan finally got on the board, its only run of the game, in the bottom of the third. Catcher Sarah Thomas doubled to right to send home Lexi Jager to bring WMU within four, 5-1.
Up by seven, 8-1, at the end of four complete, Cal tacked on an insurance run in what would prove to be the last inning of the game. In the top of the fifth, Jamia Reid earned a RBI thanks to her key bunt to third base to plate Echavarria, who reached on a single up the middle.
Senior hurler Marissa Drewrey, who pitched the complete game, helped the defense sent the Western Michigan line-up down in order to close out the game. The Bears play again Saturday, this time against Kentucky in their fourth of five games this weekend.
