Cats Outlast Mustangs 4-3
Feb. 14, 2010
TUCSON, Ariz. —The Arizona Wildcats men’s tennis team fell behind early, losing the doubles point, but climbed their way back with fight and emotion to top the Cal Poly Mustangs in a close 4-3 victory at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center on Sunday.
“We won that match solely on the fact that the guys competed their hearts out,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “I don’t think we played our best tennis but we competed very well and that’s the main thing.”
On court one, the duo of Borja Malo and Pat Metham battled with Caly Poly’s Jordan Bridge and Alex Sonesson. The Wildcats eventually took the lead at 6-5, and earned the next two points to win the set 8-5.
On court three, senior Andres Arango teamed with sophomore Jason Zafiros for the first time this season to face Drew Jacobs and Robert Zacks. Emotions ran high in this competitive matchup with the Wildcats falling behind 0-3. Arango and Zafiros fought back and tied it at 4-4, but the duo traded points back and forth and the Mustangs took the match 8-6.
With the Wildcats and Mustangs tied 1-1, it came down to court two to see who would pick up the doubles point. Cal Poly’s Rob Foy and Matt Fawcett jumped out to quick a 5-0 lead against Wildcats Geoff Embry and Ravid Hazi. The Wildcat pair bounced back and responded with three straight points to make it 3-5. The Mustangs earned the next two points to make it 3-7 and the Wildcats clawed their way back to earn the next two points to make it 5-7, but Foy and Fawcett outlasted the Cats 8-5 to claim the doubles point.
In singles competition, No. 113 ranked Jason Zafiros competed in the No. 2 position against Bridge. Zafiros took a 2-0 lead to start the match. Bridge rebounded and came back with two of his own points but the Bradenton, Fla. native never fell behind and won set one, 6-4. Zafiros mimicked his first set play in set two defeating Bridge 6-4 in the same fashion to earn a point for the Wildcats.
On court three, Carrasco faced Jacobs, who he previously faced at the Rebel Classic in the second round during the fall season. Carrasco, the junior followed up the same type of play by defeating Jacobs in two sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Arango, playing in the No. 1 position for the second consecutive match for the Wildcats, downed Fawcett to remain undefeated in singles competition this season. The left-hander from Ecuador defeated Fawcett 6-4 in the first set. Fawcett battled back and took Arango to a tie-breaker, but Arango secured the win 7-5.
With Arizona up 3-1, it came down to courts four, five and six to clinch the victory. On court five, Embry, like Carrasco faced similar competition. Embry took on Mustang’s Brian McPhee who he previously defeated in the finals of the Rebel Classic. Once again, the Phoenix native topped McPhee 7-6, 6-1 to clinch the match and seal the win for the Wildcats.
On court four, Cal Poly’s Sonesson took Arizona’s Malo to three sets, eventually topping the junior 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 to earn the Mustangs their second point.
Metham also went three sets with his opponent, Foy. Metham fell in a close 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 match. Foy earned the Mustangs their third point.
With the win the Wildcats improve to 4-1 and remain undefeated at home with three wins. They continued their sweep of the Mustangs improving the series to 7-0. The Mustangs fall to a 0-4 record.
“Even though, we didn’t play our best tennis this weekend, their intensity, emotion and fight was there and I give the guys a lot of credit for that,” Berkowitz said. “We will start playing better and we will pick it up as the weeks progress.”
The Wildcats remain at home next weekend to host No. 60 BYU and South Alabama.
