No. 24 Beavers in First at the Battle at the Beach
Feb. 14, 2010
NEWPORT COAST, Calif. - The 24th ranked Beaver men's golf team finished the opening round of play in first place at the Battle at the Beach with a 7-under par 348. The tournament, which is hosted by Long Beach State and UCLA features tough competition including four top 25 teams. Seniors Mike Barry and Diego Velasquez are tied for first place at 5-under.
Barry tallied nine birdies on the day while Velasquez, who is the second-ranked player in the nation, notched five birdies and never scored worse than a bogey.
'Mike and Diego played extremely well today,' head coach Brian Watts said. 'There have been a lot good golf shots, and a lot of made putts.'
While Barry and Velasquez stole the show, sophomore Alex Moore provided a spark for the Beavers, battling back from two bogeys on the 11th and 12th hole to finish with a 2-under 69. Barry, Velasquez, and Moore combined to have a combined 12-under opening round.
'There's a lot of golf to be played yet. Overall we played well, it just could have been much better. A lot of the teams had guys struggle. It's an unfamiliar golf course to a lot of people,' Watts said. 'The guys that struggled today will go out and step it up tomorrow, and hopefully Diego, Mike, and Alex can continue their good play.'
Senior Paul Peterson, who returned for his first tournament since a shoulder injury in the fall posted a 2-over 73, struck the ball well on Sunday but may have been bit over-excited to return the lineup according to Watts, but he's expected to have an even better day on Monday.
