Cardinal Ascend to No. 1 Ranking

STANFORD, Calif.-- Stanford women's swimming, following an undefeated dual season (9-0) are ranked No. 1 nationally, joining the University of Georgia, as the nation's top teams, according to a vote of the nation's coaches.

Stanford, which has been ranked in the national top-five all season, moved up from No. 4. Georgia and Stanford each received 12 first place votes, 24 of the possible 34 votes for 734 points. Texas, Arizona and Cal round out the top five.

The Wildcats and Golden Bears, along with No. 6 Florida all lost to Lea Maurer's team during the dual season. The Cardinal also defeated No. 9 USC, as well as Arizona and Cal over the last month.

The Cardinal, which feature Olympians Elaine Breeden and Julia Smit, boast the nation's fastest 200 free relay team, as well as swimmers ranked in the national top-five in 10 of the 13 events.

Stanford is gearing up for the postseason, traveling to Long Beach, CA for the Pac-10 Championships from February 24-27. The diving programs, coached by Dr. Rick Schavone, will head to the conference diving championships in Federal Way, WA from February 25-27.
