Feb. 17, 2010
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Seniors Julie Burney and Megan Langenfeld and sophomore Samantha Camuso all hit home runs, as the fourth-ranked Bruins defeated UC Santa Barbara 14-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday at Campus Diamond.
Burney and junior GiOnna DiSalvatore each had three hits, while Camuso, Langenfeld and junior Katie Schroeder had two apiece. Camuso drove in four runs, Burney had three and Langenfeld added a pair of RBI.
The Bruins (4-1) scored a pair of runs with two outs in both the first and second innings. Schroeder led off the game with a single to center and stole second. The Gauchos (4-2) got the next two outs, but Langenfeld beat out a chopper to the right of the second base bag and Schroeder never stopped running, scoring from second to make it 1-0. After DiSalvatore walked, Camuso singled up the middle to plate Langenfeld and put the Bruins on top 2-0.
In the second, Burney started the inning with a walk and junior Monica Harrison singled to left. UC Santa Barbara again got the next two outs, but sophomore Andrea Harrison delivered a clutch hit, belting one off the yellow line on top of the left-field wall to bring home a pair and make it 4-0.
UCLA added three more in the third. DiSalvatore singled to open the inning and Camuso walked, with junior Grace Murray pinch-running for Camuso. Senior Kaila Shull attempted to move both runners over on a sacrifice, but UCSB second baseman Jackie Sweet dropped the throw from catcher Kelsey Anderson, allowing DiSalvatore to score and Murray to move to third. The Bruins then executed a double steal, as Shull swiped second and Murray scampered home with the Bruins' sixth run. Burney followed with a single to left-center to plate Shull and make it 7-0.
The Bruins invoked the mercy rule with four in the fourth. Langenfeld was hit to start the inning, DiSalvatore singled to left and Camuso launched her second home run of the season to center to put the Bruins up 10-0. One out later, Burney hit her first homer of the year to left to make it 11-0.
Langenfeld hit the Bruins' third homer of the game with one out in the fifth. The bomb to left field was the senior's second of the season. After DiSalvatore doubled and Camuso walked, sophomore Dani Yudin doubled to right to plate DiSalvatore to put the Bruins on top 13-0. Burney followed with a single through the left side to bring in Camuso and make it 14-0.
Junior Donna Kerr (3-0) allowed a pair of baserunners in three innings on a first-inning walk and a second-inning single. She struck out one in each inning. Freshman Destiny Rodino made her collegiate debut, hurling a pair of 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth, striking out one.
