On The Road With Women's Hoops
Feb. 17, 2010
BERKELEY, Calif. - The women's hoops team has just arrived in Berkeley and finished its scheduled dinner, as is always the case when the team arrives to its hotel on a Pacific-10 Conference trip. OSU left Portland at 5:30 p.m., landed at 7, and made the short trek from the Oakland Airport to Berkeley.
OSU is staying at the Claremont Resort & Spa, a familiar sight for those who have traveled with team prior to the season. It's the club's usual hotel and pretty grandiose. As the information booklet in each room indicates, the place has been around since 1915 and is pretty impressive. There's a good number of tennis courts on site and there have been fancy parties held at the spa in previous years in which the team visited.
One of the most impressive aspects of the hotel is the view it offers of the bay. It's probably about five miles from the water, but the hotel sits on a large enough hill that it allows those staying at the spa a chance to have a great view. Of course, I'm not fortunate enough to be one of those people but I can only imagine if I was.
Then again, with the fog that often settles on the Bay Area, that view takes a backseat until midday. And then, it lifts, and gives you a sense of how beautiful the area is.
Because the spa has been around since 1915, it has the classic look that was often seen in the 20s and 30s. The beds, bathrooms, and mirrors in each room give off that distinctive feel from the era. And of course, since it's nearing its 100th birthday, and that usually denotes history, it also gives off the feel of a Alfred Hitchcock movie. The hallways are long and spacious and there are stylized couches and chairs once you come off the elevator.
There have been rumors in past years that there are rooms that are haunted. A few of the players - won't name names - spent a few minutes after dinner looking around the lobby and even asked the bellhop which room or rooms were haunted. I didn't stick around to find out the answer - after all, who wants to know if maybe your room is the one that's haunted after all - but I can't imagine it's true.
Then again, you never know.
