Breaking It Down With Bailey

Feb. 19, 2010

Hey you Dawg fans!

Hope that you guys are enjoying the sunny weather in Seattle! I sure know we are lovin' our 2010 schedule so far. I am writing to you from the plane right now with Morgan snoozing on my left and Jenn catching a few z's to my right. I'm jealous.

We are currently experiencing turbulence, in case you were wondering.

Anywho, to break down the Tempe weekend, I'd have to say it was a sweet little start to the 2010 season. It was actually nice to play some different opponents other than the 17 other faces I see everyday. And boy did we have some moments of greatness this weekend. Danielle clearly started off the season with a little gem of her own by throwing a perfect game. The defense showed flashes of their leather by making three crucial plays...on the only three balls put in play. Morgan (Albatross) Stuart made a sick MLB play on a bunt where she barehanded the ball and threw it uphill for the putout at first. Jenn (Black Widow) Salling snagged a ball that was smoked up the middle and made it look as routine as ever as she made the throw to Niki at first. And finally, in the seventh inning, a low liner made its way into a sliding Kimi (the Deer) Pohlman's glove to preserve the hitless (and everything else-less) game. We showed a little bit of power by belting three home runs that game...but we all are aware that we can't rely on the long ball all season (although it's still nice to see).

The next day, we played a few of my old teammates from summer ball so that was pretty cool to see them! But Ohio U was our closest scoring game of the weekend...we need to give a tremendous thanks to a CLUTCH sixth inning pinch-hit two-run blast by freshman Shawna (Woodstock) Wright though. So...thank you. And congrats to Baily (Ell-Why) Harris on her first collegiate win! Also, the Nevada game was nice to finish in six innings. They were ready to play us though, but once again, Woodstock decided to go deep for another two-run shot to help us on our way to an eight-run shutout of the Wolfpack.

Saturday we had the pleasure of going over to Danielle's brother Brett's house for a nice sandwich spread and to hang out in the Arizona sun for a bit. It was a beautiful house and thanks to the Lawrie's for breeding such gifted children. A few crazy ladies jumped into the freezing abyss that some would like to call a pool (which was seriously chilly) so props to Amanda (Lizard) Fleischman, Alyson (Baboon) McWherter and Ashley (Jasmine) Tuiasosopo. Thank goodness later in the night they defrosted because Tui ended up having an RBI that helped break open the gates for more runs to be scored and helped us overcome a pesky Cal State Northridge team.

Sunday rolled around and we finally were able to play under the natural sunlight instead of the lights we'd played under the three previous nippy nights. And apparently the Canadians like playing in the morning the best. The two Canucks went yard to ensure a 5-0 shutout of Notre Dame, with the Black Widow hitting what may have been her first career Grand Salami (get out the rye bread, grandma) and Danielle hitting her fourth yahtzee of the weekend. What a nice treat.

Shout out to Morgan Littlefield for a successful first trip of her career with us! It's wonderful to have someone constantly making sure we are well nourished and all checked in for our flights. So far so good!

Welp, I think that about wraps it up. UWTV gave me a Flip for this trip...we'll see how many people get annoyed by being videotaped.

As for the quote this week: 'Fall in love with what you do; believe in what you're doing; strive to constantly improve' - Bob Moawad

This fits our team perfectly. I know that every single one of my teammates loves this game, believes in themselves and is continuously looking to improve...which I believe can be the ingredients to get what we want the most at the end of the year.

Here we go Dawgs!

Stay classy and GO TEAM PURP!!!

Love, 20
