Cal Baseball Shuts Out Southern Utah, 14-0, in Season Opener

BERKELEY, CALIF. -

Freshman designated hitter Devin Rodriguez had a huge day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a grand slam and an RBI double as Cal baseball shut out visiting Southern Utah, 14-0, in the 2010 season-opener Friday, Feb. 19 at Evans Diamond. Rodriguez, from Newhall, Calif., got a single in his first collegiate at-bat in the second inning, and then helped propel the Golden Bears' eight-run third inning with a bases loaded shot over the left field fence off of Thunderbird starter Steve Johnson (3.0 inning, 13 hits, nine earned runs, one walk, one strikeout).

Cal also got solid pitching from sophomore right-hander Erik Johnson, who threw 7.0 innings, scattering six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
