Softball Starts off Aggie Classic with Win over Louisiana-Monroe

Feb. 19, 2010

College Station, Texas – Sophomore Audrey Roderfeld (Vista, Calif.) hit a three-run shot over the left field fence to boost the Oregon State softball team (3-3) to a 8-2 victory over the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks (3-2) on Friday morning in the first game of the Aggie Classic.

Oregon State tallied 11 hits behind sophomore Ashley Sanchez’s (Alameda, Calif.) 3-for-4 performance, Roderfeld’s 2-for-3 and senior Tarah Black’s (Portland, Ore.) 2-for-3 with both hits as doubles.

Louisiana-Monroe took the early 1-0 lead on a RBI double by Janel Salanoa in the first inning, but Oregon State answered back in the bottom of the second beginning with senior Tarah Black’s (Portland, Ore.) one-out double to right center. Black advanced to second on a ground out before scoring on senior Dani Chisholm’s (Boring, Ore.) at bat, a fly ball error on ULM centerfielder Brianna Love, allowing Chisholm to reach second. Sanchez scored Chisholm from second before advancing there herself on a single up the left side to give the Beavers the 2-1 advantage after two.

Roderfeld added to the Oregon State lead with her homer to score freshman Kilee Lippincott (Lake Chelan, Wash.), who was pinch running for sophomore Mary Claire Brenner (Portland, Ore.), who reached on a single, and sophomore Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.), who singled down the right field line. With only one out, Oregon State took the 5-1 lead in the bottom of the third.

The Beavers added another run in the bottom of the third on another RBI single by Sanchez to left field, giving the team a 6-1 lead through three full.

The Warhawks tacked on another run in the top of the fourth on a ground out RBI to get within four with the score at 6-2.

But Oregon State answered back with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth behind freshman Maggie Doremus’ (San Diego, Calif.) double to left field to score sophomore Nikki Chandler (Houston, Texas), who was running for Roderfeld, and Black, giving Oregon State the 8-2 lead after five.

Hall earned the win after throwing five full innings with five strikeouts. Louisiana-Monroe pitcher Heather Fritz was charged with the loss after throwing 2.1 innings, giving up four runs on five hits and one walk. Oregon State senior Kelly Dyer (Eugene, Ore.) came in relief to throw two scoreless innings.
