UCLA Baseball's Gerrit Cole Named to Golden Spikes Award Watch List

Feb. 19, 2010

DURHAM, N.C. - UCLA sophomore right-handed pitcher Gerrit Cole has been named as one of 50 top amateur players to USA Baseball's preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List, as announced this week. Cole went 4-8 with a 3.49 ERA and 104 strikeouts as a freshman for the Bruins in 2009.

A second-team preseason All-America selection by Baseball America earlier this month, Cole broke the school single-season freshman strikeout record last spring, fanning 104 batters in 85.0 innings. The former standout at Orange Lutheran High School led the Pac-10 Conference with a .191 opponent batting average.

Cole went 4-0 with a 1.06 ERA in six games last summer for the USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate). He threw a complete game in a 1-0 victory over Canada on July 24, 2009, scattering two hits and striking out seven in 9.0 innings. That win allowed Team USA to advance to the 2009 World Baseball Challenge championship game.

Cole was rated the No. 1 prospect on the USA Baseball National Team last summer by Baseball America.

The 6-foot-4 right-hander from Santa Ana, Calif., will take the mound for No. 23 UCLA in its season opening contest versus Southern University this evening. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
