Cal Poly Evens Series With 10-6 Win Over USC
Feb. 20, 2010
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Mason Radeke allowed one earned run over six innings with seven strikeouts Saturday as the Cal Poly Mustangs defeated the USC Trojans, 10-6, in non-conference action at Baggett Stadium. Radeke struck out the side in the second after the Trojans loaded the bases.
Mark DeVincenzi earned the save after coming in with the bases loaded in the seventh and inducing a groundout from Mike O'Neill after the Trojans got within two runs. Cal Poly (1-1) built a 7-1 lead in the fifth before staving off two rallies by USC (1-1).
Ross Brayton went 3-for-4 with three RBI while Mitch Haniger and Evan Busby had two RBI apiece. Haniger and Luke Yoder lifted solo home runs off USC starter Chad Smith (0-1), who allowed seven runs (six earned) in 4 1/3 innings with five walks and four strikeouts.
Matt Hart went 3-for-4 for the Trojans with two doubles, but USC stranded 12 runners on the night and left a runner at third base four times.
Yoder led off the third inning with a home run to left and Haniger led off the fourth with a shot to left to take the 4-0 lead. The Mustangs chased Smith in the fifth after RBI singles from Brayton, Haniger and Busby. Alex Sherrod hit a line drive homer to right center in the sixth for the 7-2 Mustang advantage.
In the top of the seventh, the Trojans pushed across three runs. Taylor Wrenn beat out a slow grounder to short to load the bases with two outs before freshman pinch hitter Casey Husband drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 7-5 in favor of Cal Poly off DJ Mauldin. DeVincenzi then came into the game as O'Neill hit a soft ground ball back to the pitcher, who recorded the third out at first.
Cal Poly added three insurance runs in the eighth, but USC did not go quietly in the ninth with a two-out rally. Freshman Richard Stock (Westlake Village/Agoura HS) blasted a pinch-hit homer on the first pitch to right. Cade Kreuter then hit an infield single, followed by O'Neill beating out another grounder to put runners at first and second. However, Joe De Pinto hit a ground ball to short with Mike Miller flipping to second baseman Matt Jensen for the final out.
Sunday's game time for the series finale has been moved to 11 a.m. in anticipation of rain expected in the area tomorrow afternoon.
Notes: Stock, Cade Kreuter, Husband and Brett Williams made their Trojan debuts in tonight's game...Matthew Foat is 6-for-9 in the series...freshman Alex Glenn made his first collegiate start in left field tonight, going 0-for-2 for the Trojans.
