Feb. 20, 2010
STANFORD, Calif. - Led by senior Alissa Haber's four RBI, the Stanford softball improved to 8-1, Saturday, on Day Two of the Stanford Nike Invitational. The Cardinal earned its third straight five inning run-rule victory, this time over Nevada (10-2). Stanford also edged Sacramento State, 1-0, in the second game of its double-header. The Wolfpack fell to 3-4 overall, while the Hornets dropped to 3-7.
Haber led the Cardinal offense, tallying two hits, two runs scored to go with her four RBI. Sophomore Maya Burns turned in a hit and two RBI, while senior Shannon Koplitz added two hits and two runs scored.
Junior Ashley Chinn earned the win over Nevada, improving to 4-1 on the young season. She threw three innings and struck out three batters before freshman Teagan Gerhart entered in the fourth to finish the game. Gerhart tallied four Ks while allowing just one hit in the contest.
Nevada posted its two runs in the first inning against the Cardinal, but Stanford would answer with two runs of its own to tie it up after one. Leading off on the day, Haber drew a walk that set up sophomore Ashley Hansen's double to left center field. Haber initially held up at third base, but an error on the short stop brought Haber home. Hansen then scored as Rich reached on a fielding error by the second baseman. Burns walked, placing runners on first and third, but Stanford was unable to capitalize ending the inning with a 2-2 tie score.
The Cardinal added another run in the second inning. Sophomore Jenna Becerra singled to start the inning. Sophomore Sarah Hassman, batting in the number nine position, then recorded a sacrifice bunt to put Becerra in scoring position. Haber ripped a double to left field to score Becerra and give the Cardinal a 3-2 advantage after two.
In the third, Stanford loaded the bases, which brought up Haber once again. The All-American registered her first triple of the season to clear the bases. The Cardinal added two runs in both the fourth and the fifth innings to end the game early.
Against the Hornets, Stanford struggled to score runs, but scored one in the third to edge Sacramento State. It was Haber once again drawing the walk for the Cardinal to set up her teammate. Hansen singled up the middle to score Haber for Stanford's only run of the contest.
Gerhart pitched the complete game to remain undefeated on the season at 4-0. The rookie struck out six batters, while allowing just three hits and no walks for Stanford.
The Cardinal wraps up the Stanford Nike Invitational, Sunday, with a showdown with No. 17/19 Fresno State. First pitch from Smith Family Stadium will be at approximately 3:45 p.m.
