No. 23 UCLA Baseball Secures 10-3 Victory Over Bethune Cookman

COMPTON, Calif. - Right-hander Trevor Bauer recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts, allowing three runs and four hits in 8.0 innings, to lead the No. 23 UCLA baseball team past Bethune Cookman, 10-3, in an Urban Invitational contest at the Major League Baseball Urban Youth Academy on Saturday evening.
Catcher Steve Rodriguez led UCLA's offensive attack, belting two solo home runs in a 2-for-4 effort. The Bruins (2-0) also received one home run from designated hitter Marc Navarro. Rodriguez, Navarro and third baseman Cody Regis each registered two RBI.
Bauer (1-0) recorded three strikeouts in each of his final two innings. The sophomore from Valencia, Calif., recorded at least one strikeout in seven of his eight innings (none in the second frame).
Bethune Cookman's Julio Morales (0-1) absorbed the loss, surrendering five runs (four earned) and three hits in 3.1 innings. Morales walked six and struck out three batters.
UCLA took advantage of nine hits, nine walks and four hit-by-pitches to earn a 10-3 victory. The Bruins claimed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. After Justin Uribe escaped from a pickle on a dropped throw between second and third base, he scored on a double play groundout hit by Regis.
The Bruins belted two home runs in the third frame to claim a 4-0 lead. Rodriguez led off the inning with a first-pitch solo home run, his second round-tripper in as many nights. After center fielder Beau Amaral drew a walk, Navarro belted a two-run homer to right field.
Bethune Cookman (0-2) cut UCLA's lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the third. Center fielder Justin Hoyte connected for a two-run homer to right field with catcher Peter O'Brien aboard first base.
UCLA scored once in the fourth before adding three runs in the fifth inning to lead 8-2. The Bruins' three-run fifth was highlighted by a two-RBI single through the right side of the infield by Regis. Amaral followed three batters later with a two-out single to left field, scoring Regis from third.
Bethune Cookman scored its third run on a pinch-hit solo homer to left field by DJ Leonard in the sixth inning.
UCLA returns to action against Cal State Northridge on Sunday at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
Game Notes: Steve Rodriguez was the only Bruin hitter to record a multiple-hit game...Rodriguez also had the first two-home run game of his career...right-hander Dan Klein made his first appearance since 2008, tossing a 1-2-3 scoreless ninth inning...Klein required just five pitches to notch three outs...UCLA received hits from eight different players.
