Softball Falls to Mississippi State

College Station, Texas – Sophomore pitcher Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, but the Oregon State softball team (3-5) fell to Mississippi State (6-1), 13-3, on Saturday morning at the Aggie Softball Complex.

 

Hall looked sharp in the circle for the Beavers through the first two innings, earning a pair of strikeouts in the first inning before striking out the side and adding four more in the second.

 

Mississippi State capitalized on its three hits and a hit by pitch to score two on Jessie Spain’s ground ball fielder’s choice to sophomore Nikki Chandler (Houston, Texas) at shortstop in the top of the third. But in normal form, Oregon State quickly responded with junior Audrey Roderfeld (Vista, Calif.) hitting a two-RBI double to dead centerfield to score senior Dani Chisholm (Boring, Ore.), who reached by beating out the throw from shortstop Erin Nesbit, and junior McKenna Lowe (Tustin, Calif.), who reached on a hit by pitch. After three full the score was tied 2-2.

 

The Bulldogs added another run in the top of the fourth starting with a Jessie Bailey leadoff double to right field, nearly thrown out by sophomore Mary Claire Brenner (Portland, Ore.) from right field. A sacrifice bunt, followed by a RBI single by Courtney Nesbit put the team back in the lead going into the bottom half, 3-2.

 

Hall, earning her second hit of the day, roped one past first baseman C. Nesbit down the right field line, advancing to second on an error by right fielder Brittany Bell to kick off the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, Alberta) entered the game to pinch run for Hall but was left stranded as the inning closed with the Bulldogs still leading 3-2.

 

Mississippi State continued to build on its lead, scoring three in the fifth before adding another in the sixth to lead 7-2 in the middle of the sixth. In the final inning, the Bulldogs added six more on a single to left field by Spain and a grand slam by Kaili Smith to widen the gap to 13-2.

 

The Beavers tacked on one more run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by freshman Ally Kutz (Mt. Vernon, Wash.), scoring Chisholm, who started off the inning with a double to left center.

 

Hall was charged with the loss after throwing 4.0 innings, giving up three runs. Senior Kelly Dyer (Eugene, Ore.) threw 1.1 innings, facing three in the sixth inning. And sophomore Karmen Holladay (Corvallis, Ore.) also came in to throw the next inning, in her first appearance of the season. Hall reentered throw the final two outs of the game.

 

Mississippi State’s Kylie Vry threw 4.0 innings to earn the win, improving to 2-0 on the season. C. Nesbit went a perfect 4-for-4 to lead the Bulldog offense with three RBI.
