LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 Oregon State gymnastics team lost for the first time in the 2010 season 197.375-196.325 to No. 9 UCLA. Mandi Rodriguez finished third in the all-around and earned a pair of individual titles on the vault and beam.
Oregon State's record dropped to 9-1 while UCLA moves to 7-2. Mandi Rodriguez finished third in the all-around with a score of 39.375.She also tied for the individual title on the vault and won the balance beam. Makayla Stambaugh (ankle, knee, toe) was unable to complete her routine and scratched from the beam and floor lineups.
'We had too many mental errors early in the meet and you can't do that and expect a big score,' head coach Tanya Chaplin said. 'I'm glad that we were able to finish well. We showed some determination and really looked good on the beam. We have a few more meets on the road to really show who we are. We should keep getting healthier with Kelsi (Blalock) getting closer to returning and we'll need Makayla to return too. But overall, we just need to compete better from the beginning.
Oregon State fell behind early in the meet on the uneven bars. Whitney Watson, in the leadoff spot, took a deduction when she needed an extra swing and scored 9.650. Mandi Rodriguez followed with a 9.725 and Olivia Vivian added a 9.750. Jen Kesler tied her season-high with a score of 9.850 and Laura-Ann Chong nailed her routine to tie her career-best of 9.925 for the fourth time this season.
Steps on the landings cost the Beavers on the vault with Watson and Melanie Jones each scoring 9.65. Stephanie McGregor bounced back from a fall last week to score 9.775 on her vault followed by Stambaugh's 9.85. Becky Colvin and Rodriguez, who have been stellar on the vault all season continued to perform well and added scores of 9.875 and 9.925.
At the halfway point, moving to the floor exercise, the Beavers trailed 98.675-97.975. McGregor, who was re-inserted to the lineup with Stambaugh out, scored a 9.775 to lead off and Leslie Mak, performing on the floor for the first time since she injured her elbow early in the season, matched McGregor with a 9.775 of her own. Vivian had a wonderful routine to match her career-best with a 9.825 and Colvin added a 9.80. Jones performed another beautiful routine to score 9.90 for the third week in a row and Rodriguez finished with a 9.775.
Trailing 147.900-147.050, the Beavers rebounded in the final rotation with a season-high team score of 49.275. Jones and Vivian started off the lineup with career-bests of 9.80 and 9.85 respectively. The Beavers have a short week and will be on the road again next week, this time in Tempe, Ariz. to face Arizona State, Friday, Feb. 26.
NOTE: OSU did not count a fall for the third week in a row ... Sophomore Leslie Mak performed on the floor exercise for the first time since suffering a sprained elbow prior to the Ohio State meet (1/16) and scored 9.775 ... Makayla Stambaugh whacked her knee on the low bar during her bars mount, then hit a toe later in the routine and did not finish the routine.
