Arizona Third at Wildcat Invite

TUCSON, Ariz. - Pac-10 Conference teams Arizona State, Stanford and Arizona hold the top three spots, respectively, after the first round of the 26th Annual Wildcat Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona, Monday afternoon at the Arizona National Golf Club.
Wet and windy conditions shortened play on day one to just 18 holes and the entire tournament to 36 holes after the event was originally scheduled for 54 holes.
Arizona State had one of five players to shoot par or better as Carlota Ciganda carded an even-par round of 71 to help the Sun Devils post a team total of 6-over par 290. Stanford is three shots behind at 293, led by Sally Watson who shot even par at 71, while host Arizona was led at 1-over par 72 by sophomore Isabelle Boineau to card a team total of 294.
Three Wildcats were each one shot off their respective teammates to finish out the team score. Sophomore Margarita Ramos shot 2-over 73 while junior Alejandra Llaneza was 3-over on the day with a round of 74. Sophomore Nikki Koller wrapped up the scoring with a 4-over par around of 75 and freshman Sherlyn Popelka was 8-over par at 79 as the displaced scorer.
The Wildcats also had five individuals competing in the event. Senior Brittany Benvenuto matched Popelka at 79 while senior Emily Mason shot 81. Freshman Kyndall Ardoin shot 85 on the day, sophomore Ashley Malaska shot 89 and freshman Marie Tschida carded 95 for her 18 holes.
Taylor Karle of Pepperdine holds the individual lead after shooting 3-under 68 as she carded four birdies on the front nine while posting just two birdies for the round. Alison Whitaker of Duke is one shot back while Caroline Hedwall shot 1-under par 70 to sit two shots off the lead.
The final round of play is set to begin with a shotgun start on Tuesday, February 23 at 8:00 a.m. (MT)
