Jayne Appel Nabs Second Straight Pac-10 Player Of The Week Honor
Feb. 22, 2010
STANFORD, Calif. - For the second straight week, No. 2/2 Stanford's senior center Jayne Appel was named Pac-10 Player of the Week, making it a total of nine times that she has been so honored in her career. That tally ties Appel with former Cardinal teammate Candice Wiggins for most career conference player of the week nods.
Appel earned this week's honor after averaging 19.0 points and 11.0 rebounds and shooting 60.7 percent (17-for-28) from the field in Stanford's (25-1, 15-0 Pac-10) home sweep of Oregon and Oregon State. The Pleasant Hill native's efforts over the weekend helped the Cardinal clinch at least a share of its 10th consecutive Pac-10 regular season title as well as the top seed at next month's Pac-10 Tournament.
In Thursday's 104-60 victory over Oregon, Appel shared the team lead with 26 points while also grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. Appel went 11-for-18 from the floor in the contest, and in the first half had already reached a double-double, going for 16 points and 10 rebounds while leading the Cardinal out to a 59-27 halftime cushion.
On Senior Night two nights later, Appel posted her 13th double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds in Stanford's 82-48 rout of Oregon State. During the contest, Appel scored her 2,000th career point, making her just the sixth player in Stanford history to reach the mark, and only the third player in program history to reach both the 2,000-point and 1,000-rebound marks, joining Nicole Powell (2000-04) and Val Whiting (1989-93).
On the year, Appel is averaging a double-double with 14.2 points and 10.0 rebounds a game while shooting 53.5 percent from the field.
The second-ranked Cardinal heads to the desert this weekend, looking to clinch outright the Pac-10 title in a 6 p.m. PT meeting at Arizona State that will be televised in the Bay Area on Comcast SportsNet. Stanford closes the weekend at 2 p.m. PT Saturday afternoon at Arizona.
