Feb. 22, 2010

BERKELEY - The No. 3-ranked California women's tennis team (7-1) earned a 6-1 win over No. 28 Arizona State (3-2) on Monday, Feb. 22, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears came up with four of their points by winning three-set matches on courts two through five and earned their eighth doubles point of the season in as many matches. No. 20-ranked junior Marina Cossou provided the clinching point at the second singles court with her 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win over No. 97-ranked Kelcy McKenna.

Cossou also helped earn the first point of the day as her and senior Kasia Siwosz teamed up to take out Hannah James and McKenna at the second doubles court, 8-3. The newly-ranked duo showcased their No. 54 ranking by maintaining their spotless 7-0 record in dual matches. At the top court, Cal's No. 13-ranked team of junior Mari Andersson and sophomore Jana Juricova sealed the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Nadia Abdala and Micaela Hein. It was also Andersson and Juricova's seventh dual doubles victory. With the first point decided, Cal's freshman tandem of Tayler Davis and Annie Goransson fell, 8-4, to Michelle Brycki and Nicole Smith at the third doubles court.

The Sun Devils tied the score at one-all as Ashlee Brown took a 6-4, 6-2 win over Davis at the sixth singles court, but the Bears went ahead once again when freshman Nelly Radeva completed her win over Sianna Simmons at court five, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. The Bears went up, 3-1, when No. 2-ranked Juricova staved off Abdala to record a 7-5, 7-5 win at the top court.

Three minutes after Juricova earned Cal's third point, Cossou came through with the fourth point to clinch the match for the Bears. Siwosz split sets with James on the fourth singles court as she won the first set, 6-3, before surrendering a 6-3 score in the second. Siwosz snapped a three-match singles losing streak as she emerged with a 6-2 score in the third set to give Cal a 5-1 lead. No. 75-ranked Andersson dropped her first set, 6-4, to No. 106-ranked Hein but bounced back to come away with a 7-5 win in the second before finishing up with a 6-4 win in the third. Andersson has won all eight of her singles matches in dual play this season.
