Arizona Takes Second at Wildcat Invite

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona battled windy and cold conditions to claim second place at the 2010 Wildcat Invitational hosted by the Wildcats, Tuesday afternoon at the Arizona National Golf Club.
Oklahoma State sophomore Caroline Hedwall posted a final round of 5-under par 66 and finished her 36 holes at 6-under 133 to claim a 5-shot win. Sophomore Margarita Ramos was the top finisher for Arizona, finishing the event at 3-over 145 to share 7th place with Taylor Karle of Pepperdine and Carlota Ciganda of Arizona State.
Alejandra Llaneza finished in a tie for 12th place, shooting 73 on Tuesday to finish at 5-over 147 for the tournament. Isabelle Boineau ended up at 149 while freshman Sherlyn Popelka shot 1-over 72 on the day to end up at 151. Nikki Koller was the final member of the team and carded a two-day total of 153.
Brittany Benvenuto was the top finisher of the Arizona players to compete as an individual, shooting a second-straight round of 79 to finish at 158. Emily Mason (171), Kyndall Ardoin (174) and Marie Tschida (179) rounded out the team while Ashley Malaska withdrew from the tournament mid-way through her final round.
Arizona State led at the end of both days and posted a 12-shot win over the Wildcats, finishing the event with a team score of 8-over par 576. The Wildcats lept over Pac-10 rival Stanford to take the runner-up spot at 588, besting the Cardinal by seven strokes at 595. California (596) and Duke (599) rounded out the top five.
Hedwall erased a two-shot deficit after the opening round by carding the low score of the tournament on the final day of the event, which was shortened to 36 holes after heavy rains washed out the second round on Monday. Alison Whitaker of Duke and Juliana Murcia of Arizona State finished tied at 1-under 141, but Murcia won the tiebreaker for the runner-up spot after shooting 67 on the day.
Jodi Ewart of New Mexico, the 2009 Wildcat Invitational co-champion, was one of three players to finish at 2-over par 144. Cydney Clanton of Auburn and Jennifer Johnson of Arizona State matched her score to stake a portion of fourth place.
Arizona makes a quick turnaround and is back in action on Monday, March 1 at the Bruin Wave Invitational co-hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine at the Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Santa Clarita, Calif.
