California to Stay in Bay; Takes on Stanford
Feb. 23, 2010
The California Golden Bears are a little closer to home this week, competing in a quad meet hosted by the No. 6 Stanford Cardinal down in the South Bay. In addition to the Cardinal, the Bears will also be competing against North Carolina and Eastern Michigan. The meet will take place on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. at Maples Pavilion. It is the first of three Northern California meets for the road-tripping Bears, who have already concluded the home portion of their 2010 schedule.
In the first week of Regional Qualifying Scores used to determine rankings (as opposed to total season averages), North Carolina and Eastern Michigan do not have enough scores yet to earn a ranking. Last week, UNC was ranked No. 31 and Eastern Michigan 47. Cal is also a meet shy of being able to generate an RQS. They were ranked No. 48 in last weeks rankings.
Last Week: Dual Meet at Washington California fell to the No. 23 Washington Huskies 195.625 to 189.325.
All-Around Freshman Madisyn O'Brien competed in her fifth straight all-around, improving over last week's score with a total of 38.425, her highest total of the season. Avery Gee was the Bears other all-arounder. O'Brien and Gee finished second and third, respectively.
Bars The Bears had their lowest team score of the season on bars, scoring a 46.425.
Beam The Bears had their best beam score in three meets. Mariesah Pierce earned a 9.675. She is the third different Cal gymnast in three weeks to have the team's top mark in the event. It was the second best beam score of the season for Cal and a PR for Pierce. Madisyn O'Brien also scored a PR with a 9.650.
Floor For the third consecutive meet, the floor was Cal's strongest event. Junior Avery Gee earned the top mark of the meet for any Cal gymnast in any event, scoring a 9.775 for her routine. Sophomore Shana Johnson posted a PR with a 9.650. Sophomore Alex Leggitt had by far her best performance of the season, scoring a 9.675 for her routine. Madisyn O'Brien matched her season best, earning a 9.625 for the second straight meet.
Next Up - Friday, March 5, Cal at San Jose State The Golden Bears compete in the second of three consecutive Northern California meets, heading south for a tri-meet hosted by the San Jose State Spartans. It will be the second time this season that Cal competes against San Jose State (they were in Berkeley on Jan. 22) and will be the second week in a row that Cal will compete against Stanford (who will be the third team in the tri-meet).
