WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- CALIFORNIA freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt and WASHINGTON junior Venise Chan have been named the Pac-10 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week for Feb. 15-21, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Konigsfeldt of Rungsted Kyst, Denmark, provided the clinching point as the Golden Bears knocked off No. 8 Stanford, 4-3, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Stanford, Calif. After dropping the first set 6-7(8). Konigsfeldt fought back to win the second and third set 6-4, 6-4, respectively, to upset No. 34 Alex Clayton. In his doubles match, he teamed with So Nick Andrew and the duo earned their 10th victory together by upsetting Stanford’s duo of Clayton/Richard Wire, 8-6. Clayton/Wire are ranked No. 26 in doubles.
This marks the second-career weekly honor for Konigsfeldt and the ninth all-time Pac-10 Player of the Week selection for the California men.
Chan, a native of Hong Kong, China, led the 19th-ranked Huskies to wins over No. 49 Sacramento State, 4-3, and No. 52 Minnesota, 6-1. Against Sacramento State, Chan defeated Maria Meliuk in straight sets (6-2, 6-3). The next day, playing at the No. 1 singles position, she easily beat Alessandra Ferrazzi of Minnesota, 6-1, 6-2. Teaming with Samantha Smith, the pair helped UW to a pair of doubles victories and the doubles point in each match.
This is the fourth-career weekly honor for Chan and the sixth all-time Pac-10 Player of the Week selection for the Washington women.
