Chan Scores Another Pac-10 Player Of The Week
Feb. 23, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - 14th-ranked junior Venise Chan pocketed her second Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week of the season and the fourth of her career, the conference office announced today. Chan was 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles over the week of Feb. 15-21 to help the Huskies to a pair of wins.
On Saturday, the Huskies faced 49th-ranked Sacramento State, a particular nemesis that had beaten UW by a 4-3 score each of the past three years. But Chan helped Washington finally reverse its fortunes and hand the Hornets a 4-3 defeat with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Maria Meliuk at No. 2 singles. She also teamed with sophomore Samantha Smith for an 8-4 win over Sacramento State's No. 2 doubles team.
Sunday afternoon Chan moved up to No. 1 singles and quickly dispatched Alessandra Ferrazzi of Minnesota, 6-1, 6-2, as the Huskies went on to beat the 52nd-ranked Gophers, 6-1. Her 9-7 win with Smith at No. 2 doubles also clinched the doubles point for the Dawgs.
Chan also won Player of the Week honors on January 25 in the first week of the season. Her two honors this year added to the one that sophomore Denise Dy earned on Feb. 2 give the Huskies three of the five awards handed out so far this year. Chan has won four of Washington's six honors dating back to the inception of the award in 2006.
This season Chan, a native of Hong Kong, has gone 16-6 in singles and 6-2 in dual play with seven wins over players ranked in the Top-40 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The Huskies, who moved up to a season-best 18th in the team rankings today, will travel to face UC Irvine this Saturday, Feb. 27 and then continue on to play Long Beach State on Sunday, Feb. 28. Both matches are at 11 a.m. Pacific.
