CHANDLER, Ariz. - The Washington State University men's golf team captured its second win of the season at the WSU Snowman Getaway Tuesday. The Cougars pulled away in the final day after trailing Idaho at the conclusion of the second round Monday. The team went one-under par on the final day to win by seven strokes at the par-72, 7,334 yard Cattail Course of the Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz.
Trent Sanders felt at home Tuesday playing in his native state. The sophomore out of Scottsdale, Ariz., posted a 6-under 66 Tuesday, the best round of any competitor in the tournament field. The round was the lowest of Sanders' career, and helped him move up 14 spots during the final day to finish in a tie for fourth. The top-10 finish is the fourth of the season for Sanders, putting him in a tie for seventh on WSU's all-time list.
'Trent was unbelievable and very exciting to watch,' said Walt Williams, who earned his 15th win as the WSU Men's Golf Coach. 'We are very happy to get a win to start the spring season.'
The most consistent player in the field was Kevin Tucker. The senior out of Kennewick, Wash., carded three rounds of 74 (+2) and gradually moved up the leaderboard to a 13th-place finish. The tournament marked Tucker's 22nd career top-25 finish.
Austin Hurt and Paul Mitzel rounded out the Cougar lineup. Hurt progressed each round of the tournament and finished 26th with a two-day total of 228 (+12). Mitzel finished with a tournament total 232, ending in a tie for 41st.
Williams also decided to take four members of the team to play as individuals. Nick Grigsby led the group by finishing in a tie for 33rd (230, +14). Robert Murray, Hank Frame and John Moon also competed in the spring opener. Murray and Frame finished a stroke apart at 235 and 236, respectively, while Moon took 63rd with a three-round total of 238.
The Cougars will compete again March 5-6, when they travel to Laredo, Texas for the Border Olympics.
