Konigsfeldt Receives Second Pac-10 Player of the Week Award
Feb. 23, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - California men's tennis freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt has been named the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 15-21, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Tuesday, Feb. 23. Washington junior Venise Chan received the women's weekly award.
Konigsfeldt provided the Golden Bears with the clinching point as Cal took out then No. 8-ranked Stanford, 4-3, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Stanford, Calif. on Saturday, Feb. 20. After dropping the first set, 7-6, and 10-8 in the tiebreaker, Konigsfeldt fought back to win the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-4, to upset No. 34-ranked Alex Clayton at the second singles court. In his doubles match, he teamed with sophomore Nick Andrews to record their 10th victory together by upsetting Stanford's No. 26-ranked tandem of Clayton and Richard Wire, 8-6, on the second doubles court.
On Feb. 9, 2010, Konisgfeldt became the first Cal freshman to garner the Pac-10 Player of the Week award and now becomes just the third Bear to receive the award more than once in the same season. His selection is the eighth overall weekly honor for the Cal men.
The Bears welcome No. 5 USC (9-1) and No. 7 UCLA (4-2) to the Hellman Tennis Complex for non-league matches this weekend. Cal will take on the Trojans in a 1:30 p.m. PT match on Friday, Feb. 26, before facing the Bruins in a 1 p.m. PT match on Saturday, Feb. 27. Live streaming video will be available for each match via links on the CalBears.com men's tennis page.
