No. 10 USC Women Snag 5-2 Win At San Diego State

Feb. 23, 2010

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The No. 10 USC women's tennis team got the week started with a winning note as the Trojans took a trip to pick up a victory over San Diego State, winning 5-2 today at Aztec Tennis Center. The Women of Troy hung up the doubles point first and outlasted Aztec efforts to fight back in singles thanks in part to a three-set clincher from #51 freshman Valeria Pulido. USC improves to 7-2 overall with today's road win.

Pulido helped out early as well, combining forces with Cristala Andrews at No. 3 doubles for an 8-6 win over SDSU's Cioffi/Aguilar. Coming through with the clinching doubles win to take USC ahead 1-0 in the match was Danielle Lao / Alison Ramos, who took down Trunk/Wais 8-4. The Aztecs were able to win the last doubles match in an 8-5 decision over USC's Kinstler/Sanchez, but the first point of the match was already in Trojan hands.

USC went ahead 2-0 with #31 Danielle Lao's quick 6-2, 6-0 win over Julia Wais at the No. 3 position, but SDSU answered back and cut it to 2-1 as Olivia Colman topped USC's Lyndsay Kinstler 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 6 slot. #3 Maria Sanchez padded it back to a 3-1 USC advantage on her 6-2, 6-2 takedown of #58 Julia Trunk at No. 1, but again the Aztecs managed a response. At No. 2, SDSU's Alicia Aguilar fought back to beat #19 Alison Ramos 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2, and the match score was 3-2 USC.

That's when #51 Valeria Pulido pulled through with a comeback of her own at the No. 4 spot. The freshman fought through a first-set hole to beat Sierra Ellison 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 and clinch the match by getting USC ahead 4-2. Finishing things off from her No. 5 position was junior Cristala Andrews, who pinned up her eighth straight singles win with a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 comeback over Emma Cioffi to make it a 5-2 USC victory.

The Women of Troy now turn to a competitive weekend against conference opponents Cal and Stanford. No. 10 USC will first host the No. 3 Bears at 1:30 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 26) at Marks Stadium before facing No. 11 Stanford at 12 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 27).
