LONG BEACH, Calif. - The University of Arizona women's swimming team opened the Pac-10 Championships Wednesday night by winning the 200y medley relay and placing fourth in the 800y free relay at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, Calif.
Schluntz got things started by splitting a 24.56 over the first 50 yards swimming backstroke. Then Chandler gave UA the lead by going 27.17 followed by Agy in the butterfly swimming a 23.00. Darlington, swimming the anchor freestyle leg, came home in 22.27 to give the Cats its first Pac-10 title of the 09-10 Championships.
Arizona has now won the 200 medley relay four out of the last five seasons at the Pac-10 Championships and still holds the NCAA record set in 2008.
Tomorrow opens with a full day of events beginning with preliminary trials of the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle at 11 a.m. PT. Tomorrow evening the final heats of those events along with the 200 free relay final will begin at 6 p.m. PT.
Look for Anderson to try and defend her 500 free Pac-10 title she claimed last year as a freshman. The Cats will have a myriad of excellent swimmers in the 200 I.M. lead by seniors Jenny Forster and Caitlin Iversen. In the 50 free, look for veterans Vorster and Schluntz to lead UA's charges.
