Wrestling Remains Top 15 in Final Poll, Six Remain Top 20

Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team remains in the top 15 in the final NWCA/USA Today Division I Team Coaches Poll for week 15.

 

The Beavers were previously ranked have been ranked 15th for the past two weeks after breaking into the list in the December 8 poll. Oregon State finished the regular season 18-3, 6 -2 Pac-10, and currently is tied for the third most dual meet wins.

 

In other rankings, Oregon State is ranked as high as 13th in the D1CollegeWrestling.net poll. The Beavers are 15th in the Intermat poll and are 14th according to Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine (WIN).

 

Junior Colby Covington (Springfield, Ore.) remains in the top 10 in the InterMat Division I Individual Rankings, moving up to eighth after being ranked ninth for four straight weeks. Covington, who was previously ranked 11th, moved up after defeating previously ranked No. 3 Stephen Dwyer of Nebraska on January 24 in a 2-1 decision at 174 pounds. He finished the regular season 35-5 with the most dual meet wins of anyone on the team.

 

Five other Oregon State wrestlers also remain ranked in the InterMat Individual Rankings with senior Keegan Davis (Salem, Ore.) leading the way with a 13th place ranking at 157 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Jason Lara (Midway City, Calif.) and sophomore Clayton Jack (Vacaville, Calif.) are 15th at 125 and heavyweight. Sophomore Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens, Wash.) is close behind with a 16th place ranking. Redshirt freshman Mike Mangrum (Auburn, Wash.) made his way back into the rankings last week, now ranked 17th after being 19th.


The Beavers have defeated three top 25 opponents in No. 12 Wisconsin in the first dual of the season, No. 24 Arizona State and No. 16 Cal Poly, but fell to No. 8/12 Boise State and No. 8 Oklahoma.

 

The last time Oregon State was ranked this highly was in the January 31, 2001, under former head coach Joe Wells. The Beavers ranged from 12th to 17th place, finishing the season off in 17th place.

 

Oregon State heads to the Pac-10 Championships this week. The Two-day tournament begins on Friday at 12:00 p.m. at UC Davis.
