Evans Leads Women's Swimming on Day 2 of Pac-10 Championships

The Arizona State women's swimming team's record-book was rearranged following day two of the Pacific-10 Women's Swimming Championships. Held at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, Calif., the Sun Devils finished the second day of competition in sixth place with 206 points.
Ashley Evans only has one more person to overcome for the 200 IM ASU record. The senior won the 'B' final with an NCAA consideration time of 1:58.9. She is only behind Sun Devil great Agnes Kovacs in the all-time standings. Penelope Yamauchi moved all the way up to third in the ASU standings. Previously seventh all-time, the sophomore clocked at 2:00.18 which is under than the NCAA 'B' standard. Senior Jamie Martinez also earned a consideration time. She is currently fourth on ASU's all-time list after posting a time of 2:00.33. Paige Schultz earned a preliminary time of 2:02.21, which puts her at eighth on the all-time list.
In the 50 free, Katie Haron moved up to fifth on the Sun Devils' top 10 list. The junior, who has improved significantly under Dorsey Tierney-Walker's guidance, finished third in the 50 free at 23.04. Sara McDaniel touched the wall at 23.58 in her 'C' final while Sam Caldwell was right behind her at 23.70.
In the 500 free, Cassie Morrice was the top Sun Devil finisher as she clocked in an NCAA consideration time of 4:49.59. Junior Shannon Garrett earned her own consideration time as she finish in 4:51.98.
The Sun Devils ended the night placing fifth in the 200 free relay. The team of Haron, Evans, McDaniel and Caldwell raced to finish under the NCAA 'B' cut with a time of 1:32.55.
The Pac-10 Championships continue through Saturday. The team will compete in the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 400 medley tomorrow.
