Pac-10 Earns 33 Automatic Bids, Announces Tournament Brackets

Davis, Calif. – Junior Colby Covington (Springfield, Ore.) leads the No. 15 Oregon State wrestling team as it heads to the Pac-10 Championships, beginning Friday, as the only No. 1 seed for the Beavers. The two-day tournament begins at 12:00 p.m.
The Pac-10 received 33 of the 284 automatic qualifiers, marking the fourth most out of 11 conferences. Forty-six wrestlers who receive at-large bids will be announced on March 10.
The breakdown of qualifiers per each weight class breaks down as follows: 125 pounds – 4; 133 pounds – 5; 141 pounds – 5; 149 pounds – 3; 157 pounds – 3; 165 pounds – 1; 174 pounds – 3; 184 pounds 2 – 197 pounds – 2; heavyweight – 5.
At-large selections will be made based on the following criteria: head-to-head competition, qualifying event placement, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, RPI, coaches rankings and the number of matches contested at that weight class.
Covington will face Alex Darkhovsky of UC Davis to start his tournament run at 174 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Jason Lara (Midway City, Calif.) will take on Micah Ferguson of Cal Poly at 125 pounds. Sophomore Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens Wash.) will face Justin Durham of Cal State Bakersfield at 133 pounds, while redshirt freshman Mike Mangrum (Auburn, Wash.) will take on Chris Drouin of Arizona State at 141 pounds.
Freshman RJ Pena (Salem, Ore.) will face Vicente Varela first at 149 pounds, while senior Keegan Davis (Salem, Ore.) will compete against Andrew Balch of Cal State Bakersfield at 157 pounds. Competing at 165 pounds, senior Dan Brascetta (Aurora, Colo.) will wrestle Joseph Wilson of UC Davis in the opening match.
Redshirt freshman Ty Vinson (Great Falls, Mont.) will take on Jake Meredith of Arizona State at 184 pounds with sophomore Chad Hanke (Dayton, Ore.) opening up the tournament against Abraham Otrambo of UC Davis. Wrapping up competition for the Beavers, sophomore Clayton Jack (Vacaville, Calif.) will take on Samuel Zylstra of Boise State at heavyweight.
In nearly every weight, the Beavers have defeated their first round opponents with the exception that Hanke has not faced Otrambo yet and Jack split with Zylstra, winning the first meeting 3-2, but falling in 4:22 in the second meeting.
