Feb. 25, 2010
The No. 28 Arizona State women's tennis team plays host two teams this weekend. The Sun Devils will take on No. 64 Fresno State on Friday before hosting No. 33 Texas on Sunday. Friday's match against the Bulldogs begins at 1:30 p.m. The Sun Devils will take on the Longhorns at noon on Sunday. ASU is currently 3-2.
The Sun Devils' match against Saint Mary's was cut short due to rain. Despite being unfinished, two Sun Devils picked up wins as Micaela Hein and Michelle Brycki added one more tally to their win column. The team suffered a tough loss to No. 3 California on Monday. The Sun Devils dropped four three-setters to fall 6-1 to the Golden Bears.
After a being out for the early part of the year due to injury, Michelle Brycki has burst into the Sun Devils' lineup. Excited about being able to play again, she is currently 2-0 in dual matches in the No. 6 slot.
Nadia Abdala is looking to cap her ASU career in superior fashion. The senior from San Diego has been named to the All-Pac-10 team each of her years at ASU. She is currently 3-2 in dual matches.
The Sun Devils return two All-Americans to their squad. Kelcy McKenna snagged singles and doubles All-American recognition last season. McKenna's doubles partner Micaela Hein also earned All-American accolades.
Hailing from Across the Pond
Hannah James has fit into the Sun Devils lineup very nicely. A native of Birmingham, England, James has just dropped one dual match this season. At 3-1, she has won two of her three matches in straight sets.
What a Coach!
A role model on and off the courts, Sheila McInerney was recently honored by the YWCA in their Tribute to Women campaign. The 26th year head coach has been selected as the Sports Leader honoree. As the head coach of the Sun Devils, McInerney boasts a 375-239 record and has taken ASU to 16 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances. In addition, her teams are frequently recognized for their excellence in the classroom.
The Sun Devils open Pac-10 season in the Pacific Northwest as they will compete against Washington State on Friday, Mar. 5 and Washington the following day.
