LUBBOCK, Texas - Garry Kuykendall collected three hits and Spencer Jackson earned his first-collegiate victory as Washington State defeated Bethune-Cookman 10-4 in the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic at Dan Law Field, Friday.
The Cougars (3-0) scored four times in the top of the first inning and never looked back in the first meeting in school history with Bethune-Cookman (1-5).
Kuykendall and Kyle Johnson opened the frame with singles to put runners at the corners. The duo pulled off a double steal and Johnson advanced to third on a throwing error for the first run of the game. Johnson scored on wild pitch to put WSU on top 2-0.
One out later, Derek Jones walked and Matt Fanelli was hit by a pitch. Ryan Peterson struck out on a 1-2 pitch with the runners going and the throw to second by Wildcats' catcher Peter O'Brien sailed into center field allowing Jones to score. Fanelli came all the way around when the ball was bobbled by centerfielder Justin Hoyte and the Cougars had a 4-0 lead.
'We were able to get our offensively going early and Spencer Jackson gave us a good outing in his first start of the year.' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'We were a little stagnate offensively in the middle of the game, but once again we were able to get a lot of guys some playing time.'
WSU picked up a run in the second on a hit by pitch, single, fielder's choice and a throwing error. After Bethune-Cookman scored a run in the second and another in the third to close within 5-2, the Cougars put the game away with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth.
In the fourth, Kyle Buchanan and Kuykendall opened with singles and both runners moved up on a sacrifice by Johnson. Matt Argyropoulos plated Buchanan with a ground out. Matt Fanelli led off the fifth with a double and scored when Ryan Peterson reached on an error. Peterson moved to second on a walk, took third on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch to give WSU an 8-2 lead.
The Wildcats tallied once in the eighth, but the Cougars responded with a pair of runs in the ninth inning. WSU put together four-straight singles, capped by Michael Weber's pinch hit, two-run flare to left. Bethune-Cookman capped the scoring on a pinch hit home run by Alejandro Jimenez in the bottom of the ninth.
Jackson, a sophomore southpaw, gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits, struck out two and did not walk a batter in five innings of work. He threw 37 of his 56 pitches for strikes and retired the last-seven men he faced.
