Huskies Handle Ducks, 5-2, In Eugene
Feb. 26, 2010
EUGENE, Ore. - Facing an old rival on their home courts is never an easy task, but the 23rd-ranked Husky men's tennis team was up to the challenge this evening as it scored a 5-2 win over Oregon at the Ducks' Student Tennis Center. Washington improves to 10-1 with the win and is off to its best start since the 2003 season.
The Huskies defeated the Ducks for the 12th-straight time and knocked Oregon down to 9-3 overall. But it looked tough early as Oregon took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point in a tiebreaker at the No. 3 doubles position. Washington would not be deterred in singles, however, winning the first four singles matches to clinch the win. Senior Derek Drabble earned the critical point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Nico Bjerke at No. 4 singles.
Junior Tobi Obenaus continues his strong play at fifth singles, as he posted the first Husky point with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Aaron Clissold. Freshman Kyle McMorrow had a big win over UO senior Marcos Verdasco at second singles, 7-5, 6-3, to make it 2-1 Huskies.
Despite going three sets, junior Martin Kildahl finished up a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Ric Mortera at No. 3 singles prior to the straight-set win by Drabble. After the match was decided, the final two singles matches at the first and sixth spots required third set super-tiebreaks. 51st-ranked Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan was the victim of the format as Alex Cornelissen was able to pull out the 10-8 tiebreak to get the 6-7, 6-2, (10-8) win. But junior Alex Rosinski capped the night with a 5-7, 7-6, (10-7) win over Duncan MacDonald-Korth in the six spot.
'It's always good to get another road victory,' said head coach Matt Anger. 'I'm disappointed we didn't get those tiebreakers in doubles and in Jeevan's match; we would have liked a few more points on the board. But it was a tough match and we're happy to get through it. We'll have another tough one tomorrow.'
Tonight's encounter does not count towards the Pac-10 standings. That dual will take place in Seattle on April 17 in the final regular season match of the year.
Washington will stick around in Eugene for another day to face a tough Nevada team in a neutral site match. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
