Mandy Urfer and Katelyn Boyd Power No. 7 Softball Past USF in Extra Innings
Feb. 26, 2010
TEMPE, Ariz. – Two homeruns from Mandy Urfer and a 4-for-4 performance from Katelyn Boyd powered the Sun Devil offense to an 8-7 win in extra innings as the seventh-ranked Sun Devil Softball team collected their 10th win of the season to go 10-2 as Hillary Bach pushed her record to 4-0.
The USF Bulls put one on their tab first as Megan Elliott struggled with control early on in the first with two wild pitches helping to put a runner on third before a single brought a run home. A nasty glove play by Krista Donnenwirth at third for a double play helped keep the Bulls at bay and their lead at one.
ASU rallied back in bottom of the inning to tie the game up with a clutch single from Annie Lockwood, but the Bulls weren’t done running yet as they came back in the second to put two on the board with a two-RBI from lead-off hitter Gina Kafalas to regain the lead 3-1.
ASU was a pesky lot though, as they tied it up again as Sam Parlich singled to take first before Mandy Urfer sent a 1-2 pitch looking for a new home in New Mexico with a homerun to right center. Urfer brought the thunder again in the fourth inning as she took the first pitch she saw to left center this time to give ASU their first lead of the game.
The game resumed in a see saw battle for the lead as USF regained it in the top of the seventh with a freak wild pitch to score one before ASU’s Annie Lockwood played the hero to tie it up 7-7 with a long bomb to left center to send it to extras. Loading up the bases in the eighth inning ASU was determined to win it as they put the bat in the hands of Lacy Goodman who came through in the clutch with a single to third to end it.
The Sun Devils return to the home diamond tomorrow with a double header lined up against South Florida with start times at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Tempe at Farrington Stadium.
