No. 7 Beavers Bounce Back with Win in the Desert

Feb. 26, 2010

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 7 Oregon State gymnastics team bounced back from its first loss of the season to post the fourth-highest road score in the program's history and the Beavers trounced No. 22 Arizona State 196.925-194.650, Friday night.

Oregon State's record improved to 10-1 while Arizona State's record falls to 2-8. Mandi Rodriguez notched two individual titles - vault and balance beam - and Makayla Stambaugh added a win on the bars.

Despite having only 10 gymnasts healthy enough to compete and Stambaugh, who is a regular in the all-around lineup, held out of the balance beam and floor exercise lineups due to a sore ankle, the Beavers posted their highest score of the season.

'I'm really happy with our performance tonight. They did a really good job with the short week,' head coach Tanya Chaplin said. 'It isn't easy to compete on the road on a Sunday and come back to perform on the road the next Friday, but this group handled their business well. They brought a lot of energy to tonight's performance and really went after the sticks (landings).'

The Beavers took control of the meet from the outset establishing a nearly half-point lead in the first rotation. On the bars Whitney Watson led off with her best routine in six weeks to score a 9.775. Rodriguez followed with a 9.775 of her own and Olivia Vivian followed with a 9.825. Jen Kesler scored a 9.850 for the third straight week and Laura-Ann Chong nailed her routine to score 9.90, the fifth time in 2010 she's scored 9.90 or better on the bars. Stambaugh, who struggled with her bars routine last week, was back in form scoring a career-best 9.925.

The vault team, which was underwhelming last week, just missed setting a season-high with a team score of 49.225 in the second stanza. Watson opened the rotation with a solid score of 9.725 and Melanie Jones followed with a career-best of 9.775. Stephanie McGregor matched Jones' 9.775 and Stambaugh finished her night with a score of 9.85 for the third week in a row. Becky Colvin hit her vault to the tune of a 9.90 and Rodriguez earned the individual title with a 9.925, the fifth time she has reached the 9.90-plateau this season.

At the halfway point, moving to the floor exercise, the Beavers led 98.500-97.200. McGregor opened the rotation by tying her season-high with a 9.80 and Leslie Mak followed with her own season-best of 9.825. Vivian scored a 9.80 and Colvin tied her career-best with a 9.85. Jones performed a solid routine to score 9.85, failing to score a 9.90 for the first time in four attempts. Rodriguez finished the rotation with an extremely uncharacteristic fall when she over-rotated on her 'Double Arabian' first tumbling pass.

Despite having the meet well under control the Beavers didn't let up on the Sun Devils in the final rotation. Rather the Beavers posted a season-high on the balance beam for the second week in a row, with a team score of 49.300. Jones opened the final rotation by missing her mount, but Vivian quickly got the Beavers back on track with a 9.775. Kesler tied her season-high with a 9.875 and Rodriguez matched the career-best that she set last week with a 9.90. Mak added a 9.85 and Chong finished the evening with a 9.90 to tie her season's best.

The Beavers continue with their month-long series of road trips next week, this time making their longest regular season trip of the year, at LSU in Baton Rouge, La., Friday, Mar. 6.

NOTE: OSU did not count a fall for the fourth straight week ... Freshman Makayla Stambaugh rested a sore ankle and performed only on the vault and uneven bars for the second week in a row ... OSU's team score of 196.925 is the fourth highest regular season road score in school history ... the Beavers scored a season-high on the balance beam for the second week in a row (49.300).
