Wildcats overcome Cougars
Feb. 26, 2010
PROVO, Utah--After dropping all three doubles matches, the No. 50 Arizona women's tennis team managed to rebound in singles for a 4-3 win over No. 68 Brigham Young.
Sophomore Sarah Landsman and senior Claire Rietsch were first to fall to Kristina Doerr and Romina Nedakovic, losing 8-3. In the No. 1 spot, sophomore Natasha Marks and freshman Alexandrina Naydenova, ranked at No. 42 in the ITA lost their match 8-6 to the No. 27 duo or McCall Jones and Megan Price. At No. 3, senior Ariane Masschelein and junior Jane Huh lost to Elle Carney and Chie Hayasaka 8-5.
'After losing all the doubles, things didn't look too good.' Said head coach Vicky Maes, 'We didn't show enough energy and emotion and that was concerning. We really needed to turn things around fast to pull it out in singles. I knew the effort was going to be there, but I felt that we were lacking some confidence, at least that's what it looked like in the doubles.'
In singles, Landsman brought Arizona (8-1, 0-0 Pac-10) back to life with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the No. 2 spot over Doerr.
At No. 1, No. 88 Marks lost 6-4, 6-2 to BYU's (3-5, 0-0 MWC) No. 77 Jones.
Next win for the Wildcats came on court 3 with Naydenova taking down Hayasaka in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. In the No. 4 spot, Masschelein then defeated Price, also in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
In the No. 6 spot, the Cougars came back with Carney defeating Huh 6-3, 6-4, and all attention turned to Rietsch and Nedakovic on court five.
Rietsch dropped her first set 4-6, but then rallied in straight sets to finish off Nedakovic 6-1, 6-2, clinching the match for the Wildcats.
'I'm so proud that everyone answered the call and made it a team win.' Maes added, 'Claire Rietsch was the last one on the court at 3-3 and her amazing emotion and positive energy pulled her through. I was very pleased with her composure and her leadership when things mattered most. I'm actually really proud of all the girls though. We have had to fight for all of our wins so far and this team is showing a lot of heart.'
Up next, Arizona will travel to Salt Lake City to take on No. 71 Utah, on Saturday, February 26, at 11a.m.
