Women's Distance Medley Relay Sets Cal Recorda at MPSF Indoor Meet
Feb. 26, 2010
SEATTLE, Wash. - The Cal women's distance medley relay set a school record and Mike Morrison took the first-day lead in the heptathlon to highlight the Golden Bears' first day at the MPSF Indoor Track & Field Championships on the University of Washington campus.
At the end of the night, the Cal men held third place with 26 points, while the Cal women were fourth with 23 points.
The women's distance medley relay team of Taylor Bryson, Alima Kamara, Sofia Oberg and Deborah Maier completed the 4000-meter race in 11:19.93, breaking the old Cal mark of 11:28.96 set in 2007. The Bears were second to Oregon, which finished in 11:17.71. Both the Bears and Ducks posted NCAA provisional qualifying times.
Morrison, an All-American heptathlete as a freshman at Florida before transferring to Cal, compiled 3,145 points through four events. He had the best mark of the day in the shot put (PR 42-7) and ranked second in both the 60-meter dash (PR 7.05) and long jump (23-11). Teammate Kevin Kuechler held the seventh position overall with 2,800 points.
Miles Palacios gave Cal its first points of the meet by taking third in the weight throw with a PR 61-8.25, which he unleashed on his second attempt. Palacios' previous best was 60-5.25 at the UW Invitational back on Jan. 30. Friday's effort also resulted in an improvement from 14th place last year and from fifth place in 2008.
In the women's weight throw, Kiely Smith took second with a mark of 56-3.00, a nearly 3 1/2-foot improvement from her 2010 best entering the meet and a PR by more than a foot.
Hammed Suleman and Morrison tied for third in the long jump, with both posting a PR of 24-6.25. Suleman recorded the distance on his sixth and final jump, and Morrison hit his mark on his only attempt, choosing to pass on his remaining jumps to conserve energy for the heptathlon, which was being contested concurrently.
Cherrelle Garrett, runner-up in the 60 meters last year, placed second in her heat in a season-best 7.47 seconds to qualify for Saturday's final. In the 60 hurdles, Emani Truluck claimed the final spot in the finals with a prelim time and PR of 8.58 seconds.
Kari Karlsson improved his PR in the 5000 meters by nearly four seconds, taking fifth with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:03.06. Steve Sodaro was 10th in the 20-man field in 14:13.54. In the women's 5000, senior Alison Greggor ran 16:35.75, which was also an NCAA provisional time, to place sixth. Greggor's time was just five seconds off her PR in the event and a season best.
Kellan Patterson failed to advance in the 60 meters, taking 12th in the prelims in 6.88 seconds, missing out on a chance to defend his conference title in the event. In addition, Nick Porter ran a time of 7.00 and Dash Oliver finished in 7.03.
The two-day meet concludes Saturday afternoon.
